Year End Letter

To all of our players, families, coaches, and supporters,

We have come a long way since the first season club lacrosse season 5 years ago at CDM where the team didn’t even score one goal in any of their games. This year our team had an outstanding season on and off the field and how we were able to compete in our playoff games shows that we should be one of the elite teams to beat in the county for the coming years. Only a couple of goals away from going to the championship game.

I am writing this note to thank everyone who had a hand in bringing our team together the past couple of years and making this our first CIF season a reality. If you have not been behind the scenes and watched and listened to all of the work being done it is hard to understand the time and commitment that many of the parents have put in to make this season a truly winning performance.

I would like to thank all of our board members who took the time to meet every month and help make decisions on the activities on and off the field. Our VP’s Sherry Abbott, Brian Corrigan, our Treasurer Kathy Horton, and Secretary Rose Kottke, Joe Kidushim, Kristine Flicker, Carl Wolonsky, Arnie Pinkston, Jenny Tomlin, David Prickett, Otis Mitchell, and Jeff Russell.

I am not sure how you thank Rose, Kristine and Pam Nelson for the collection and cleaning of the uniforms after each game and for helping set up the field equipment and preparing for each game. Jenny Tomlin for being the social coordinator for all of our season pre game team dinners and end of season activities, David Prickett for designing the Gratzinger trophy and coordinating all of the end of year awards and events, Mary Mix for coordinating all of our volunteers, and Veronica and Joe Kidushim for all of their help in the photographs and Ben’s help on the web site. I apologize if I have lefty anyone out it is not intentional. This letter is harder to compose than I anticipated.

One of our largest hurdles in becoming a CIF sport at the district and school level would not have been overcome without the help of Sherry Abbott, Brian Corrigan, and Joe Kidushim. The amount of time and energy in speaking with the powers at our school and the district were all worth the effort and we can truly see the fruits of all our labor. We should thank Mrs. Asrani, Mr. Peterson, and Mr. Orris for all of the support they have given us this year in putting together a truly first class atmosphere at the school and on the district level. We are definitely the talk of the Southern Section with our uniforms and Peninsula Park playing fields.

The biggest thanks do need to go out to all of our coaches Varsity and JV who have created a positive experience for all of our players and have made a huge commitment to the Lacrosse program at CDM. Mark Todd and GW Mix have instilled respect, leadership, and have become role models for our players and have given them an opportunity to play a team sport in a competitive environment. I think all of out players will be able to remember playing in a true program not just being coached on a team. Developing a program with our JV team and seeing the talent that will be moving up to the varsity level in the next couple of years is why we spend so much time making sure that everything is working the way we planned and is the verification that the goals and objectives we set each year are met and hopefully exceeded.

The last 3 years on the board and last 2 as President have been filled with a lot of success and I would like to thank everyone who had confidence and trust in all of the board and this program to allow me to help guide CDM lacrosse through the past few years. My term is up after the banquet and we will be welcoming in Michael Bush as our next President. No need for sadness, I will not be leaving the program as I have 3 more years of playing time so my vested interest in the success to the next generation is still very strong. I leave this year with CIF being a reality, money in the bank, and hopefully a lot of goodwill for everything we have accomplished on the team level, the school and district level, and judging by the talk around town and the amount of fans in the stands on the community level.

We have 2 fun events coming up in the next couple of weeks and hopefully everyone will be able to attend. Jenny will be sending out announcements and invitations and I will look forward to seeing everyone at the beach and the banquet

Thank you again for all of your support. Our players do know that we are and always will be there for them.

Regards,

Alec Abbott
President

There will not be an all-star game this year. CIF rules state that only Seniors can play in an all-star game after the season but before summer, and the cost was prohibitive for this first year. The leauge will work on a game for next year. As for this year, players will be named for the first team and second team all-county and submitted to the Register and WestsideLax. This process will be complete in the next few days. Stay tuned.

LACROSSE: Top-seeded Foothill gets a scare from No. 4-seeded Corona del Mar before prevailing in semifinal playoff contest.

Corona del Mar on the climb

CORONA DEL MAR — In terms of success and tradition in Orange County high school lacrosse, Foothill is the mountain top.

But by taking the top-seeded Knights (17-2) to the wire Monday in the semifinals of the Orange County Lacrosse Assn. playoffs, No. 4-seeded Corona del Mar (12-7) proved it is clearly approaching the summit.

"I'm pretty proud," CdM Coach Mark Todd, after the Sea Kings forged leads of 3-2, 4-2, 5-4 and 8-7, before dropping a 10-8 decision that ended their season.

"[The Knights] were [Orange County] champs last year and they are ranked No. 1 this year," Todd said. "So, to lose by just one goal is a triumphant effort."

The effort was there until the end for the Sea Kings, who scored with 57 seconds left to halve a 10-8 deficit, then made two valiant efforts to score on its final two possessions, but to no avail.

It was a tough fourth period for the Sea Kings, whose final lead was erased with 1:21 left in the 12-minute third quarter when John Duddridge scored on an assist by Elliot Domanic to knot the score at 8-8.

Duddridge, who scored a game-high five goals, scored 32 seconds into the final period — on an assist from Domanic — to give the Knights the lead for good.

Foothill took the next two shots, one of which was blocked and the other sailed wide.

Down a goal and besieged by the more experience visitors, CdM appeared to begin pressing offensively. They dropped balls and had balls stolen during offensive runs. They managed only one shot in the first 11 minutes of the final period, before Noah Molnar scooped up a ball mishandled by Foothill goalie Sam Goings, and firing it in the open net to prompt a roar from the CdM rooters.

But Foothill's defensive prowess and what Todd called a lack of smart decisions in the offensive end, helped the Knights hold off the underdog hosts.

"I think we had the gas," Todd said to an inquiry about whether the Sea Kings tired in the final 12 minutes. "We just didn't make good decisions with the ball. That, I think, was a product of our inexperience."

The Sea Kings' lacrosse experience has been an uphill climb from the beginning, as with most programs undertaking a sport relatively new on the West Coast.

Todd said the program began five years ago. A few of the six seniors, including just two starters, recalled scoring a goal was difficult for that first team. Todd, who began coaching four seasons ago, could not recall if his team even won a game his first season.

Some senior players, all of whom addressed their teammates after the game, acknowledged that Monday's near upset symbolized just how much progress the fledgling program has come.

Only Austin Ray and Ty Oberly will create holes in the starting lineup when they graduate in June.

"Each year has been a building block," Todd said.

It was CdM's third lose this season to Foothill, which earned a 16-7 win on April 14 and collected a 12-9 victory on March 23.

Domanic, who leads the Knights with 63 goals and 27 assists, had four goals and two assists Monday.

Duddridge had five goals and one assist.

"Those two kids are very good lacrosse players," Todd said. "Domanic is going to Towson [University, based in Maryland, a lacrosse hotbed], which is my alma mater. I coached him on a club team. I coached a couple of those [Foothill] players, as a matter of fact."

Molnar led CdM with four goals and added one assist, while Ryan Mix chipped in three goals.

Michael Kidushim and Casey Bush were each credited with a goal.

Oberly, Nick Taylor and Ryan Mix added assists for the Sea Kings, who received 10 saves from goalie Andrew Noto.

Molnar had six ground balls (loose balls, some of which are the equivalent of steals) to lead the Sea Kings. Kevin Kottke had four ground balls and Taylor had three.

Goings made five saves for the Knights, who posted a 28-17 advantage in shots. Foothill outshot the hosts, 15-6, in the first half, but the Sea Kings converted five of those to earn a 5-5 deadlock at the intermission.

Foothill had two would-be goals taken away. Their first goal was disallowed because of an equipment violation (a pocket deemed too deep on the would-be scorer's stick). The second goal was negated when an official ruled the player who scored did so without a mouthpiece.

SoCAL BOYS: No. 9 Foothill-OC Escapes Corona del Mar in OC Semis, 10-9

Junior middie John Duddridge and senior attackman Elliott Domanic each registered a co-game-high six points to lead top-seeded Foothill-Orange County to a thrilling, 10-9 victory over fourth-seeded Corona del Mar in a CIF-Southern Section Orange County semifinal game Monday.

Duddridge scored a game-high five goals and added an assist, and Domanic finished with four goals and two assists, to lead No. 9 Foothill-OC into the Orange County championship game. The Knights will next face No. 24 El Toro, the second seed, which routed third-seeded St. Margaret's Episcopal, 13-5, in Monday's other semifinal.

The Orange County championship game is tentatively scheduled to be played Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at Mission Viejo High School.

Junior attackman Trent Jones added three points on a goal and two assists for Foothill, which improved to 17-2.

In a losing effort, freshman attackman Ryan Mix and sophomore middie Noah Molnar each had a co-team-high four points on three goals and an assist for Corona del Mar (12-7), which lost to Foothill for the third time this season.

But the Sea Kings didn't go down without a fight. Corona del Mar led 8-7 after Michael Kidushim scored with 2:45 remaining in the third quarter. Foothill answered with a three-goal run and pulled ahead, 10-8, after Domanic scored his fourth goal with 6:07 remaining in regulation.

In a thrilling final minute, Corona del Mar cut it to one when Molnar scored with 57 seconds remaining. On the goal, Foothill was penalized for unnecessary roughness, giving the Sea Kings a man-up opportunity for the remainder of regulation.

Corona del Mar got off two shots in the first 30 seconds before turning the ball over. Foothill cleared its defensive end, but turned the ball back over to Corona del Mar with about 12 seconds left. On Corona del Mar's last-gasp possession, the clock expired before it could get off a shot.

"Our team showed a lot of heart," Foothill Coach Jon Fox said. "We kept battling back from whatever the situation was. We dug our heels in, and the defense really got it done."

SoCAL BOYS: El Toro Gets Balance in Win over Corona del Mar, 8-4

Senior attackman Dave Van Boxtel and senior middie Alex Lyon both registered a co-team-high three points to lead El Toro to an 8-4 victory over Corona del Mar in a CIF-Southern Section game Wednesday afternoon.

Van Boxtel and Lyon each scored two goals and added an assist to lead El Toro (5-1) to a comfortable win. Junior middie Ryan Hellmich and junior attackman Graham Nichols both added two points on a goal and an assist, and senior middies Ryan Forrest and Ryan Jack both scored once for El Toro.

Corona del Mar, which had a 34-21 advantage in ground balls, fell to 5-2.

El Toro led 3-1 at the end of the first quarter, 5-2 at halftime and 8-3 going into the fourth quarter.

"We knew they were going to run us a lot," El Toro Coach Greg Guy said. "We knew they'd have us scouted, so we knew we'd just have to play better than them. When the rubber hit the road, we executed better than they did. We took more shots and our defense was stout, to say the least. We stifled them on defense."

SoCAL BOYS: No. 25 Foothill-OC Drops Corona del Mar, Stays Unbeaten

By Kevin Brereton
WSL California Correspondent

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. -- Junior middie John Duddridge and junior attackman Riley Hales each scored three goals and added one assist to lead undefeated No. 25 Foothill-Orange County to a 12-9 victory over Corona del Mar in a CIF-Southern Section game Friday afternoon.

Junior attackman Trent Jones scored once and added two assists, and junior middies Tyler Brown and David Rudge each scored twice for the Knights (8-0), who won their eighth straight.

"We wanted to come out and try our best," Duddridge said. "Whatever happens, happens. I don't think we played that great, but we put the balls in the net."

In a losing effort, freshman attackman Ryan Mix scored four goals, sophomore middie Noah Molnar scored twice and added one assist, sophomore attackman Dave Kidushim scored twice and junior attackman Mike Kidushim scored once and dished one assist for the Sea Kings (5-3), who lost their second straight.

Both teams battled through a scoreless opening seven minutes before Foothill scored twice to take a 2-0 lead. With 2:39 left in the first quarter, Dave Kidushim was crushed by Foothill goalie Sam Goings, but he still held the ball and managed to bounce it into the cage to bring the Sea Kings back within a goal at the end of the first quarter.

Corona del Mar held a three-minute, non-releaseable, man-up advantage because of an illegal stick penalty at the start of the second quarter and scored three goals to take the lead at 4-3. Both teams exchanged goals before the end of the first half to make the score 5-4 for Corona del Mar.

Foothill fully dominated the third quarter and went on a six-goal run to take a 10-5 lead and completely shut down Corona del Mar.

"We came out super slow in the beginning," Duddridge said. "Third quarter, we finally started finding our rhythm."

The Sea Kings score three unanswered to start the fourth quarter and close within 10-8 with 5:51 left. Foothill regained a safe lead with two goals before Mike Kidushim scored Corona del Mar's sixth man-up goal, and its final goal of the game.

"I think our nerves got to us a little bit," Mix said. "But then we stepped it up. We have a lot to work on."

SoCAL BOYS: Andrew Noto Leads Corona del Mar Past Capistrano Valley

By Kevin Brereton
WSL California Correspondent

MISSION VIEJO, Calif.,-- In a contest that was all about the goalies, sophomore Andrew Noto saved 14 shots to lead Corona del Mar to a 12-4 victory over Capistrano Valley in a CIF-Southern Section game Friday night.

Sophomore middie Noah Molnar scored three goals and added one assist, junior middie Connor Pinkston, sophomore middie Casey Bush and sophomore attackman Dave Kidushim each scored twice, and junior attackman Mike Kidushim added one goal and one assist for the Sea Kings (5-1), who continued to impress.

Corona del Mar's only loss this season came against No. 18 St. Margaret's Episcopal in a one-goal thriller.

"It was a great win," Noto said. "Our team played great, and our defense made great clears."

In a losing effort, junior goalie Kevin Anderson saved 16 shots, junior middie Mike Campana scored three goals, senior attackman Scott Richardson scored once and junior middie Charlie Johnson dished an assist for the Cougars (3-2).

Corona del Mar led 6-0 lead with 7:18 remaining in the first half before Capo slipped in three unanswered goals in the final six minutes to make a game of it.

But the Sea Kings dominated the second half, holding the Cougars to one goal, as Noto made numerous saves to prevent Capistrano Valley's offense from scoring.

"We thought we were going to be able to handle them," Anderson said. "Our team just wasn't as conditioned as they were. In the third quarter, we were tired. And they still had steam left."

CIF Opener Interview with Mark Todd

by Cooper Walrod

First of all, congratulations on your win today. It will set a positive tone for the rest of the season. I am writing a lacrosse update for the new online version of trident, and I would like to ask you a few questions, if you please.

Were there any players that really stood out in either game?
In the Varsity game the 3 starting defensemen stood out the most two of which Nick Taylor and Kevin Kottke contributed to the offenses scoring, followed by the freshmen players Kyle Canale, who scored the very first goal in CDM's CIF history, and then it Ryan Mix and JD Abbott. Our other starting attackmen Mike Kidushim, David Kidushim, along with Otis Mitchell and Chris Horton rotating through also put points on the board for us. Connor Pinkston and Jake Schwartz both faced off well. While Andrew Noto, who started his freshman on our attack is now a sophomore and our starting goalie. We are hoping that he will go onto have a great career the next 3 seasons for us.

On the JV team Jordan Crone scored the first goal in CDM's JV CIF innaugural season, while sophomore goalie Connor Benvenutti and freshman Hugh Russel who came in to defend the goal in the fourth quarter both shut out the the visiting Servite HS JV. Alex Manthow had a hat trick and two assists and also led the team in ground balls. Nick Reese, Jeff Livingston, Gavin Ball, John Galosmo along with Kevin Corrigan, Chandler Mitchell also played very well.

Who are the captains?
Mike Kudishim, Austin Ray, and Connor Pinkston.

What would you say is your teams strongest asset(ie offense, defense goaltending, physicality)?
Defense was the strongest in today's game because of thier superior stickwork and speed folowed by our Attackman.

What do you think the team needs to work on?
Ball movement and applying what they've learned and rehearsed in practice to our game situations. Today we were just a little jittery and didn't have the stick work that we usually possess. It looked as the game went on that they were finally becoming comfortable with thier sticks and settled down a bit.

How are the players working together?
So far so good, but we are going to have much more difficult challeneges for us coming up in the season, so we'll try to become more cohesive both offensively and defensively as we go onward. They are a great group of guys that communicate very well with each other so I think that they will continue to grow as a team.

Just a semantical question-is the ice hockey term hat-trick used in lacrosse?
Yes

BTW...Your little brother Pete also played well in his first game as an attackman. He defended a Servite player so intensely that he ran out of both of his cleats simultaneously just prior to dislodging the ball from his stick.

Mark Todd Q&A with CdM Newspaper

Why did you start a lacrosse team at CdM?
I did not start lacrosse at CdM. I am hardly even responsible for it getting approved as a CIF sport. The team was founded by Michael Gratzinger (class of 06’) when he was just in the 8th grade. He had played it in a youth league in Irvine and knew of some other students at CdM that also played there or that had expressed interest in the sport. Mike had set a goal of making lacrosse a CIF sanctioned sport by the time he graduated, so he set out and recruited kids from other sports in non-competing seasons and the zeitgeist movement had begun. In fact, because he and his parents were so instrumental in this sports growth on campus, and the school district for that matter, that we named our most prestigious award a crystal bowl trophy the Gratzinger Cup which sets in the trophy case in the gymnasium. The Abbott family, as do many others, now carries this progress forward. With or without my coaching, the team would have occurred because it is truly the commitment the CdM student athletes to this sport and the tremendous involvement of their parents that make this team go. We are very fortunate.

What are your expectations for this year's team?
We have perhaps the toughest strength of schedule in the Southern Section of CIF. We were moved from our normal conference (CIF determines them by region and similar sized student populations) and put into a conference that benefits from a larger draft of students and that coincidentally has a longer history with the sport. As for my expectations, I think that we’ll have a very young team that will be very competitive this year and even more so in the years to come. Our student athletes definitely work hard at practice and in 6th period and it is beginning to show. It is my hope that this schedule will benefit our students with greater exposure to college recruiters across the nation. I look forward to seeing the complete dynamics of our squad once many of our players come over from their winter sports. Additionally, I’m surrounded by the most talented assistant coaches I have ever had any of whom could easily be a head coach at any other program, high school or collegiate, in the country.

Do you think that lacrosse has the potential to become a more mainstream sport?
Lacrosse is the oldest sport in the country and on the continent for that matter. It is extremely popular back East and in Canada (it’s their National Sport) and it is unequivocally the fastest growing sport in the country, as a recent Sports Illustrated article attested. I think you will see lacrosse become a mainstream sport. The NFL, NBA, and NHL were once all fledgling leagues that grew and continue to grow from constant refinement from their commissioners, owners, and fan demands. I think the professional lacrosse league (MLL) is already beginning to grow from these previous models. For instance just last summer we saw Los Angeles and San Francisco both opened professional lacrosse franchises in their cities.

What are the challenges of setting up a completely new sport at CdM?
Infrastructure is the greatest challenge. First there are field space and usage issues, as well as finance and fund raising demands from the school district on down to the individual player. Lacrosse, much like football and hockey can be somewhat cost prohibitive because of all the gear each player must buy and the equipment a team needs. Next there are the human elements such as fear of the unknown, prejudice, and competition, which we haven’t really come up against here at CdM but I’ve been told that other schools have had to battle them in addition to the infrastructure items I mentioned. Finally, it’s the political transfer of power from being an ASB club team to that of a CIF sanctioned Varsity sport, which requires a lot more paperwork from the coaching staff and students, and an incredible amount of logistical coordination between the conferences and Athletic Directors. Ironically, many of the schools typically in CdM’s conference are from the Irvine area which has had lacrosse played in its schools as long as 15 years ago, but because of inconsistent leadership, organization, and field space had decided not to join in with many of the other school districts that have become CIF varsity sanctioned sports. Fortunately, the story here is very different. Our Principal, Athletic Director, Athletic Secretary, and Parental Boosters involvement have been extraordinary. With out their leadership and diligence this would never have occurred.
