Senior attackman Dave Van Boxtel and senior middie Alex Lyon both registered a co-team-high three points to lead El Toro to an 8-4 victory over Corona del Mar in a CIF-Southern Section game Wednesday afternoon.
Van Boxtel and Lyon each scored two goals and added an assist to lead El Toro (5-1) to a comfortable win. Junior middie Ryan Hellmich and junior attackman Graham Nichols both added two points on a goal and an assist, and senior middies Ryan Forrest and Ryan Jack both scored once for El Toro.
Corona del Mar, which had a 34-21 advantage in ground balls, fell to 5-2.
El Toro led 3-1 at the end of the first quarter, 5-2 at halftime and 8-3 going into the fourth quarter.
"We knew they were going to run us a lot," El Toro Coach Greg Guy said. "We knew they'd have us scouted, so we knew we'd just have to play better than them. When the rubber hit the road, we executed better than they did. We took more shots and our defense was stout, to say the least. We stifled them on defense."

SoCAL BOYS: No. 25 Foothill-OC Drops Corona del Mar, Stays Unbeaten

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. -- Junior middie John Duddridge and junior attackman Riley Hales each scored three goals and added one assist to lead undefeated No. 25 Foothill-Orange County to a 12-9 victory over Corona del Mar in a CIF-Southern Section game Friday afternoon.
Junior attackman Trent Jones scored once and added two assists, and junior middies Tyler Brown and David Rudge each scored twice for the Knights (8-0), who won their eighth straight.
"We wanted to come out and try our best," Duddridge said. "Whatever happens, happens. I don't think we played that great, but we put the balls in the net."
In a losing effort, freshman attackman Ryan Mix scored four goals, sophomore middie Noah Molnar scored twice and added one assist, sophomore attackman Dave Kidushim scored twice and junior attackman Mike Kidushim scored once and dished one assist for the Sea Kings (5-3), who lost their second straight.
Both teams battled through a scoreless opening seven minutes before Foothill scored twice to take a 2-0 lead. With 2:39 left in the first quarter, Dave Kidushim was crushed by Foothill goalie Sam Goings, but he still held the ball and managed to bounce it into the cage to bring the Sea Kings back within a goal at the end of the first quarter.
Corona del Mar held a three-minute, non-releaseable, man-up advantage because of an illegal stick penalty at the start of the second quarter and scored three goals to take the lead at 4-3. Both teams exchanged goals before the end of the first half to make the score 5-4 for Corona del Mar.
Foothill fully dominated the third quarter and went on a six-goal run to take a 10-5 lead and completely shut down Corona del Mar.
"We came out super slow in the beginning," Duddridge said. "Third quarter, we finally started finding our rhythm."
The Sea Kings score three unanswered to start the fourth quarter and close within 10-8 with 5:51 left. Foothill regained a safe lead with two goals before Mike Kidushim scored Corona del Mar's sixth man-up goal, and its final goal of the game.
"I think our nerves got to us a little bit," Mix said. "But then we stepped it up. We have a lot to work on."

SoCAL BOYS: Andrew Noto Leads Corona del Mar Past Capistrano Valley

MISSION VIEJO, Calif.,-- In a contest that was all about the goalies, sophomore Andrew Noto saved 14 shots to lead Corona del Mar to a 12-4 victory over Capistrano Valley in a CIF-Southern Section game Friday night.
Sophomore middie Noah Molnar scored three goals and added one assist, junior middie Connor Pinkston, sophomore middie Casey Bush and sophomore attackman Dave Kidushim each scored twice, and junior attackman Mike Kidushim added one goal and one assist for the Sea Kings (5-1), who continued to impress.
Corona del Mar's only loss this season came against No. 18 St. Margaret's Episcopal in a one-goal thriller.
"It was a great win," Noto said. "Our team played great, and our defense made great clears."
In a losing effort, junior goalie Kevin Anderson saved 16 shots, junior middie Mike Campana scored three goals, senior attackman Scott Richardson scored once and junior middie Charlie Johnson dished an assist for the Cougars (3-2).
Corona del Mar led 6-0 lead with 7:18 remaining in the first half before Capo slipped in three unanswered goals in the final six minutes to make a game of it.
But the Sea Kings dominated the second half, holding the Cougars to one goal, as Noto made numerous saves to prevent Capistrano Valley's offense from scoring.
"We thought we were going to be able to handle them," Anderson said. "Our team just wasn't as conditioned as they were. In the third quarter, we were tired. And they still had steam left."
